...but I suspect I'm not the only person to say that for most bands I consider the vocalist to primarily be another instrument. There are, of course, bands whose lyrics I pay attention to, and which are meaningful for me, but there are many more bands whose lyrics are indecipherable either because they're unintelligible or because they're too abstract to pin down any specific meaning, and in those cases I simply regard it as another element of the sound.

Intelligible lyrics hurt as often as they help. Good lyrics can elevate a song, but bad ones (I'm looking at you, The Count of Tuscany) can make an otherwise great song hard to revisit.
