I shouldn't have to read them to get the gist, just like I shouldn't have to read a movie script to follow the dialogue.
Except, of course, this isn't a movie. The music and melodies are the primary motivation in this particular art form.
Perhaps Arch should stop being so lazy with his singing.

Regardless, are you this anal about everything you consume? It sounds very limiting. To each their own, I guess, but you seem like you would be happier listening to something like show tunes, where the lyrics and melodies are the primary focus.

Or, perhaps, modern country, where shitloads of money is spent to make sure you can understand every exquisitely-twanged mediocre focus-grouped word, and the melodies are seldom more than four notes.
