We're steadily moving towards a condition where a band's primary consumer product is t-shirt designs. It's pretty normal to see bands with more different shirt designs at their merch table than albums released. I've been on this train for years now; I am drowning in a mountain of shirts all over my room, closet, floor, etc. And I have four more en route to me in the mail right now. On the other hand, I haven't bought a CD since ~2017. (I steadily buy concert blu-rays though.)
Yeah, you clearly provide a lot more support as a fan than I do. I have a fair number of metal shirts, but I rarely buy them now. I hardly ever go to shows.

I am probably only notable as a brief curiosity for a few independent bands. "Dude, someone outside of our local scene wants to buy our album!"

"It's not exactly a horrible album, but it's no better than something by, I dunno, Pagan's Mind or some other shirt-tucking nerdprog band." - Matt Johnsen of Pharaoh
