From the people I've talked to, there's two ways in which albums sales do still matter.

1) They can provide far more money than streams, especially if a band is independent and selling albums directly. If you're a smaller band, selling a few thousand albums directly to your fans can bring in enough money that it would take many millions of streams to achieve, which will take years if it ever happens.

2) If you're trying to get a label deal, or support for touring, album sales are still a metric to show you're a worthwhile investment. If you can show you have sales higher than 80% of bands in your genre, you stand a better chance of getting the system behind you.
