Moon Tooth - Crux

This will probably be in my top 5 of 2019 when all is said and done. Moon Tooth play a very unique style of prog metal that's really fun and catchy without sacrificing chops. Not even sure who I would compare them to, maybe musically a bit to Mastodon (think the catchiness of later albums with the complexity of Blood Mountain) meets later Cave In? Something like that.

This album is much better than the last one (which I did enjoy, but rarely played from start to finish). The songs are better written, shorter and catchier, and the singing is much improved. The guy's voice might be a lot for people here to take (he's pretty "alternative" sounding) but he's much more controlled here. On the last album, it sometimes sounds like he's singing on a completely different song than the band is playing.

The guitarist is really awesome, super creative, tons of chops but doesn't try to show anyone up. The whole band plays their asses off. Highly recommended.

Devin Townsend - Empath

I couldn't even get through this entire album. I haven't been much into anything he's put out over the last decade, but this is barely listenable to me. It's like every one of the albums he's released over the last 10 years jammed into one. There's blast beats, there's typical Devy songs that all sound the same, there's goddamn Anneke again who sounds the same whenever she sings with him, there's bombast, kid choirs, Disney music. Songs are all over the place, not much focus anywhere, the lyrics are some self-help shit, just really hard to get through.

Waste of Space Orchestra - Syntheosis

This will probably be my favorite album of the year. Oranssi Pazuzu have probably been my favorite band I've discovered over the last 5 years. This is them and another like-minded psych black metal band from the same town in Finland, Dark Buddah Rising, coming together to record a mindfuck of an album together.

I expected more spacey, psych rock jamming and little focus, but it's not that. The songs are really good, there's tons of variety, and it's an amazing musical voyage. It's hard to describe, but you can listen to a stream of the entire album here if it sounds like your style.
