Voivod - The Wake:

This is, probably, the best Voivod since The Outer Limits, and maybe since Nothingface. "Chewy" Mongrain finally sounds like the perfect fit, instead of just the only guy that could possibly be considered, if that makes any sense. Cleaner than you expect from late-era Voivod, but in a really good way. Surprise of the year, because I didn't expect it to be THIS good.

Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence:

This has aged surprisingly well for me - it still manages to convey the same urgency that it did in 1987. If anything, I like it better now than I did then, which is saying something - although they never wrote anything better than "Voracious Souls" on any of the other records...

Ghost Ship Octavius - Delirium:

So there's Kickstarters where you like the results, and then there's this: Holy crap is this record good. I mean, like album of the year good. Not that I didn't like the first one - I loved it - but Delirium does all the things that one did and more.

Vermithrax - Imperium Draconis:

Another Kickstarter success. Excellent thrash fronted by ex-Reading Zero frontman and all-around Jagermeister-in-the-parking-lot enthusiast Chris Roy, this is well worth seeking out when Divebomb releases it later this year. Plus the artwork is everything you would want from a band named after the nemesis in Dragonslayer.

Jag Panzer - Mechanized Warfare:

I hadn't heard this in a while, so why not? Still a great Panzer album, though not as good as either the one that precedes it or follows it. When there's songs as good as "Take to the Skies" or "All Things Renewed", well, that's nitpicking.

Triumph - Thunder Seven:

I could hear this album a million times and "Time Goes By", "Stranger In a Strange Land" and "Killing Time" would still move me. An underrated Triumph album.

Negacy - Escape From Paradise:

Not as good as "Flames of Black Fire", and lacking that awesome vocalist, but still pretty damn good.

King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black:

Does this really need an explanation?
