My lists from back in the day (1987-1994)
Cool!!! I didn't have time to check out your "then and now" posts this time, but will look at it for sure.
Yeah, my opinion on many discs changed significantly over time.
1987

1/ Dio / Dream Evil
2/ Dokken / Back for the Attack
3/ Anthrax / Among the Living
4/ King Diamond / Abigail
5/ Testament / The Legacy
6/ Exodus / Pleasures of the Flesh
7/ Heathen / Breaking the Silence
8/ Kiss / Crazy Nights
9/ Whitesnake / s/t
10/ Alice Cooper / Raise Your Fist and Yell
11/ Chastain / The 7th of Never
12/ Overkill / Taking Over
13/ Keel / s/t
14/ Kreator / Terrible Certainty
15/ Artillery / Terror Squad
16/ Motley Crue / Girls, Girls, Girls
17/ Twisted Sister / Love Is for Suckers
18/ White Lion / Pride
19/ Y&T / Contagious
20/ Warlock / Triumph and Agony
21/ M.O.D. / U.S.A. for M.O.D.
22/ Nuclear Assault / The Plague EP
23/ Loudness / Hurricane Eyes
24/ Helloween / Keeper of the Seven Keys
25/ Death Angel / The Ultra-Violence
I assume there would be some changes here? Dokken at no. 2? But some great classics here, Testament, Artillery, Helloween and Kreator to name a few.
1987 was an amazing year for me, as it was the year I discovered a bunch of new thrash bands and/or thrash band that were new to me. I started reading Metal Forces in 87, which was a huge help.

Yeah, there would be major changes to this list taking into account my current tastes. I obviously still dug a lot of hair metal at this time. These days, I love my hair metal compilations, but there are very few hair metal albums I would listen to in their entirety.

A bunch of the titles below would be on the list. I liked all of these back in the day, but perhaps not all of them in 87.

Aerosmith / Permanent Vacation
Agent Steel / Unstoppable Force
Armored Saint / Raising Fear
Candlemass / Nightfall
Coroner / R.I.P.
Death / Scream Bloody Gore
Guns N Roses / Appetite for Destruction
Metallica / The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-revisited (loved this at the time of making the list, but I did not include EPs)
Mortal Sin / Mayhemic Destruction
Nasty Savage / Indulgence
Sacred Reich / Ignorance
Sanctuary / Refuge Denied
Savatage / The Hall of the Mountain King
Tankard / Chemical Invasion
Voivod / Killing Technology

I got into these in the internet age:

Apocrypha / The Forgotten Scroll
Breaker / Get Tough!
Destruction / Mad Butcher EP
Lizzy Borden / Visual Lies
Malice / License to Kill
Omen / Nightmares EP
Pretty Maids / Future World
Shok Paris / Steel and Starlight
Target / Mission Executed
1988

1 / Metallica / …And Justice for All
2 / Queensryche / Operation: Mindcrime
3 / Forbidden / Forbidden Evil
4 / Testament / The New Order
5 / Holy Terror / Terror and Submission
6 / Pantera / Power Metal
7 / Sabbat / History of a Time to Come
8 / Anthrax / State of Euphoria
9 / Helloween / Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II
10 / Overkill / Under the Influence
11 / Flotsam and Jetsam / No Place for Disgrace
12 / Megadeth / So Far, So Good… So What!
13 / Coroner / Punishment for Decadence
14 / Ozzy Osbourne / No Rest for the Wicked
15 / Rage / Perfect Man
16 / Iron Maiden / Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
17 / Holy Terror / Mind Wars
18 / Destruction / Release from Agony
19 / Hittman / s/t
20 / King Diamond / Them
21 / Slayer / South of Heaven
22 / Nuclear Assault / Survive
23 / Poison / Open up and Say Ahh!
24 / Yngwie Malmsteen / Odyssey
25 / Judas Priest / Ram It Down
88 was so stacked with classics. It's insane! I should check that Hittman out, as that's the only album on here I've never listened to.
Yeah, check out Hittman. Quality trad metal with some American power metal leanings. For fans of early Queensryche, Crimson Glory, etc.
1989

1 / Testament / Practice What You Preach
2 / Sabbat / Dreamweaver (Reflections of Our Yesterdays)
3 / Dream Theater / When Dream and Day Unite
4 / Annihilator / Alice in Hell
5 / Coroner / No More Color
6 / Crimson Glory / Transcendence
7 / Exodus / Fabulous Disaster
8 / Rage / Secrets in a Weird World
9 / Mortal Sin / Face of Despair
10 / Mordred / Fool's Game
11 / Sepultura / Beneath the Remains
12 / Metal Church / Blessing in Disguise
13 / Leatherwolf / Street Ready
14 / Kreator / Extreme Aggression
15 / Tesla / The Great Radio Controversy
16 / Nuclear Assault / Handle with Care
17 / Deathrow / Deception Ignored
18 / WatchTower / Control and Resistance
19 / Whiplash / Insult to Injury
20 / Whitesnake / Slip of the Tongue
21 / Xentrix / Shattered Existence
22 / Onslaught / In Search of Sanity
23 / Skid Row / s/t
24 / M.O.D. / Gross Misconduct
25 / Dark Angel / Leave Scars
KILLER year once again. Was Sabbat a big thing back in the day? Remember, I'm born in '86, so I'd have no chance of knowing. But I'm happy that I'm pretty much caught up with the classics as per the gospel of John Frank.
Yeah, 89 is the best year in metal for me. Sabbat was not a big thing at all. The only other person in this community who really digs this album is Claus. Others think it is fine, but I am a weirdo for liking it as much as I do.
1990

1 / Anthrax / Persistence of Time
2 / Judas Priest / Painkiller
3 / Megadeth / Rust in Peace
4 / Forbidden / Twisted into Form
5 / Artillery / By Inheritance

21 / Anacrusis / Reason
22 / Paradox / Heresy
23 / Realm / Suiciety
24 / Evildead / Annihilation of Civilization
25 / State of Mind / Mass Persecution
Lol... Persistence of Time over two of the best albums ever made in Painkiller and By Inheritance? J'ACCUSE!!!! ;-)
Yeah, I chose poorly. :-) Into the Mirror Black is my second favorite album of all-time. My top 10 now would look something like this:

Sanctuary / Into the Mirror Black
Death Angel / Act III
Forbidden / Twisted into Form
Judas Priest / Painkiller
Pariah / Blaze of Obscurity
Megadeth / Rust in Peace
Artillery / By Inheritance
Slayer / Seasons in the Abyss

19 / Guns N Roses / Use Your Illusion I
20 / Anacrusis / Manic Impressions
21 / Scatterbrain / Scamboogery
22 / Sacrifice / Soldiers of Misfortune
23 / Accuser / Double Talk
24 / Mind Funk / s/t
25 / Nirvana / Nevermind
Fun to see Mind Funk and Nirvana here as well as Mordred as no. 1. I don't agree with your rankings, but I agree with most on the list. It's funny how this compared to the previous years seem a bit weak.
Yeah, things were going downhill quickly at this point. The Black Album was always a huge disappointment for me, but I clearly liked it a fair amount for a while. After I saw them on this tour, however, I gave up on them for the most part. These days, Mordred would still easily be my #1, but my attention would then be on Heathen, Believer, Atheist, and Death.

Others from 1991 are below. The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth is the standout. I heard it back in the day, but I did not dig it immediately. Now, of course, it is an all-time favorite, and it would be #2 behind only Mordred.

Skyclad / The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth

Cyclone Temple / I Hate Therefore I Am
Forced Entry / As Above, So Below
Gorguts / Considered Dead
Heavens Gate / Livin' in Hysteria
Hexx / Morbid Reality
Last Crack / Burning Time
Letter X / Time of the Gathering
Poltergeist / Behind My Mask
Running Wild / Blazon Stone

*4 / Prong / Prove You Wrong
*5 / Vicious Rumors / Welcome to the Ball
6 / Ministry / Psalm 69
7 / Fear Factory / Soul of a New Machine
8 / Thought Industry / Songs for Insects
9 / Carcass / Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
*10 / Fates Warning / Parallels
*11 / Savatage / Streets - A Rock Opera
12 / Exhorder / The Law
13 / Defiance / Beyond Recognition
*14 / Entombed / Clandestine
15 / M.O.D. / Rhythm of Fear
*16 / Soundgarden / Badmotorfinger
17 / Megadeth / Countdown to Extinction
18 / Skrew / Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame

21 / Black Sabbath / Dehumanizer
22 / Demolition Hammer / Epidemic of Violence
23 / Gruntruck / Push
24 / Stone Temple Pilots / Core
25 / Brutal Truth / Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses
Anything you would change here? Also, what a boring year, compared to previous years.
Yeah, this list is depressing except for Thought Industry and Carcass (the only two titles on my list of all-time faves), and Swamp Terrorists, which is not even a 92 release.

The only other titles I would add now are below. Despair is the only standout.

Despair / Beyond All Reason

Atrocity / Longing for Death
Chemical Breath / Fatal Exposure
Disharmonic Orchestra / Not to Be Undimensional Conscious
Epitaph / Seeming Salvation
Letter X / Born into Darkness
Running Wild / Pile of Skulls
1993 (* = released in 1992, but received in 1993)

1 / Cynic / Focus
*2 / Skyclad / A Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol
3 / Thought Industry / MODs Carve the Pig: Assassins, Toads & God's Flesh
4 / Death / Individual Thought Patterns
5 / Primus / Pork Soda
6 / Atheist / Elements
7 / Fear Factory / Fear Is the Mindkiller
8 / Pitchshifter / Desensitized
9 / Anacrusis / Screams and Whispers
10 / Metal Church / Hanging in the Balance
11 / Kreator / Renewal
12 / Disincarnate / Dreams of the Carrion Kind
13 / Meathook Seed / Embedded
14 / Mordred / Vision
15 / Coroner / Grin
16 / Sepultura / Chaos A.D.
17 / Believer / Dimensions
18 / Sacrifice / Apocalypse Inside
*19 / Sadus / A Vision of Misery
20 / Anthrax / Sound of White Noise
Wow... metal died fast. Some good albums, but short on classics.
Yeah, the top of this list is excellent, but it fades drastically after #9.

Other I would later add are below. Dark Tranquillity is the obvious standout. I did not get into melodeath until 1997. I was not aware of its existence, as I was not online much until that time.

Dark Tranquillity / Skydancer

Amphibian / Doppelganger
Demilich / Nespithe
Gorguts / The Erosion of Sanity
Loudblast / Sublime Dementia
Mercyful Fate / Into the Shadows

11 / Live - Throwing Copper
*12 / Radiohead / Pablo Honey
13 / Slayer / Divine Intervention
14 / Skrew / Dusted
15 / Arcwelder / Xerxes
*16 / Smashing Pumpkins / Siamese Dream
17 / The Organization / s/t
18 / Sugar / File Under: Easy Listening
19 / Fates Warning / Inside Out
I'm very excited to see Smash on here. Other than that, what a weak list. Not sure if it's your fault or the state of music :-)
Yeah, I could not find much new metal at this point, so I tried to slake my thirst for new tunes by delving into alternative rock. It was a dark time in my life. :-) Of the few metal releases, only Carcass and Testament are all-time faves. Unholy Satan, does this list suck ass. So damn sad.

Other titles I would add are below. Nothing monumental, though obviously the In Flames debut is important.

Arcane / Ambiguity EP
At the Gates / Terminal Spirit Disease
Desultory / Bitterness
Dissonance / Look to Forget
Forte / Division
Gorement / The Ending Quest
In Flames / Lunar Strain
Narcotic Greed / Fatal
Queensryche / Promised Land (just the three songs I like)
Skeptic Sense / Presence of Mind
Unanimated / Ancient God of Evil

"It's not exactly a horrible album, but it's no better than something by, I dunno, Pagan's Mind or some other shirt-tucking nerdprog band." - Matt Johnsen of Pharaoh
