Funny, The year in Death Metal has been crazy strong.
Has it? I haven't been paying attention. What are some good ones?

I have no idea, either. I have gotten several text msgs about some band on Century Media called Vampire. The new Cormorant sounds like it might be pretty good.
Looking forward to the new Cormorant. Vampire is decent.

But yeah, I do not know what bands Ben is referring to either. They probably are not my thing.

The following death metal albums have stood out to me:

Demonic Resurrection - Dashavatar / symphonic death
Persefone - Aathma / prog death (their best)
Undrask- Battle through Time / melodeath

To a lesser extent:

Deivos - Endemic Divine / semi-complex death (first I have liked from them)
Replacire - Do Not Deviate / semi-complex death (not nearly as good as the debut though)

There are a few others in the death metal realm.

For thrashy death, Decadence - Undergrounder has stood out to me.

For prog black, Sunless - Urraca is definitely worthwhile.

"It's not exactly a horrible album, but it's no better than something by, I dunno, Pagan's Mind or some other shirt-tucking nerdprog band." - Matt Johnsen of Pharaoh
