It's a ripper! Those first two get semi-regular rotation, but I've always had conflicted feelings about 'Vision of Misery.' It's not tech-y enough to compete against the big boys and not intense enough to rival the first two. I like it OK, but it feels like a lost opportunity.
It does have one of the silliest bass tones of all time, though!
Frederick Thordendal's Special Defects--Sol Niger Within
Remember when he was recording a follow-up? I wonder what happened to that? Do you have the original version, or the Relapse one? I prefer the Relapse one, but maybe I'm just a screaming-solo-averse philistine.
I do remember that! It's probably on a hard drive somewhere. I have the original and it suits me just fine!
That Relapse one also had some bonus tunes, including a collab between FT and IA! I got it as a promo at the time, and it flew totally under everyone's radar. I think they pressed 1000 copies and that was it. Sells for big bucks now.
Sieges Even--Sophisticated
So good! Did you ever check out 7 for 4? Not quite as fun as the Zenk SE albums, but still a lot of fun if you enjoy his playing.
I did, but it's been quite some time. I just love Zenk's playing and cherish those two records. The debut, the timeless 'A Sense of Change,' and the two Zenk records are all the SE I need these days. But I need them badly!
Did you ever hear the Looking Glass Self demo? It was a precursor to the Christian Rock revival of Sieges Even, but with Andre Matos on vox. Matos, as much as I love him, does not exactly rule on this stuff, but it's musically awesome. Steffan Marcus plays classical guitar exclusively on this, which is a neat concept. Plus, Jens Johansson's guest solo on this tune is one of my favorite keyboard solos eva:

That poor dude is way too talented to have to work with the likes of Yngwie and Stratovarius.
