This is true.

In discussions like this, when I've mentioned that this sort of thing has never happened before, Joe has been quick to point out that it has, and his example has been that the bible selling business suffered when people no longer wanted to buy bibles. When something becomes less popular, and the demand dries up, that makes total sense.

The difference here is that while the bible selling business might have failed,it failed due to peoples' temporary lack of faith It didn't fail because people discovered a way to get all the free bibles they wanted from an anonymous benefactor.

This type of situation is entirely without precedent. First the software business, then the music business, and most recently the film industry. The driving force behind it started out as someone wanting software free. Being digital data, and the fact that there was precious little copy protection in those days, this was easy to bring about, albeit illegal.

I'm continually amazed that things have continued to slide this far downhill.
