pleasantly surprised by the Coroner album after being dissapointed by the first single (Renewal), which is definitely the worst song on the album imo.

Agreed, the album is better as a whole than the single, and I would say this works very well as an album. The flow is good; it feels like a considered whole.

the beefed up production makes it hard to equate it to Coroner's cold sound, but the riffs, arrangements, and especially the solos are generally masterful here.

I think the sound is amazing, especially the guitar tones. So much of metal sounds exactly the same and they really managed to not sound like that. I kinda miss the naivety of his old solos, which were all technique and not much theory - now he clearly knows his way around functional harmony and while his leads are very melodic and impressive, they just don't add as much to the songs as his old leads used to.

I miss Marky's lyrics, but I'm glad they didn't adopt an entirely new style of lyrics. Overall, a good comeback. Definitely better than Psychotic Waltz! I'd say better than the first Forbidden comeback, maybe on par with Atheist, but not as good as Cynic.
