Here is what I've done in the past year to advance up the ladder of audiophile geekdom:
1. Built a new dedicated listening room.
2. Spent 2 months traveling around the Northeast US auditioning new speakers
3. Brought in an acoustic engineer from Florida to tune the room. This involved running sweep tests of the room, repositioning speakers and applying acoustic panels where necessary.
4. Added a couple of magic boxes to the system that actually work that are based on a technology the manufacturer can't adequately explain within the laws of science.
So everything in the system and room is now totally dialed in. Sound reproduction is to die for. Could be the best I've ever heard. Then the weirdest problem happened...
At the advice of the acoustic engineer I bought a new sofa. I was told: leather is fine but nothing overstuffed, the back should not be above shoulder height. In Philadelphia I found a gorgeous contemporary leather sofa from a German company called Schillig. Really bad ass looking (red with white stitching). Nice tight leather on the back and seat. It fit all the parameters and it was the store's floor sample so they gave me an amazing deal on it. Sofa was delivered Tuesday morning.
That night I sat down for my first listening session and I made a very disconcerting discovery...THE FUCKING SPRINGS IN THE SOFA VIBRATED FROM LOW FREQUENCIES! This was the craziest thing. Low bass would cause the springs to resonate - not audibly but it was like I was listening in Sensurround. Yesterday I called different acoustic engineers. No one had ever heard of something like this happening. The first response was: return the sofa. Unfortunately that isn't an option as it was final sale. I thought about putting sorbothane under the feet but the problem is that its most likely air borne transmission so the only possible way to solve the issue is take the sofa apart and somehow apply something to the springs to dampen the vibration. That isn't practical.
Luckily my wife loves the sofa so I actually went back to the store last night to buy the matching loveseat so they will go into my den to replace my old sectional. I also bought another leather sofa for the listening room, making sure to buy one from a different manufacturer (Natuzzi) that only uses foam and straps. Tuesday it will be delivered and I expect the room to be rumble free.
